Skincare Basics

Don’t know where to start? These skincare basics everyone should know by heart. In our articles we dive deeper into topics. You can read more about ingredients down below!

  • Skincare steps

The basic skin care steps are make-up removal, cleansing, treatments for skin concerns, skin hydration, skin moisturization and sun protection.

The morning skin care routine can include any of these, excluding make-up removal, and the evening skin care routine can include any of these, excluding sunscreen.

A skin care routine starts with cleansing and ends with a moisturizer or sunscreen, but you can put the other steps in the order you want. It is often recommended to apply these from lightest to thickest consistency.

  • Building a skincare routine

Building your own skin care routine can be challenging, as it is affected by the number of steps you want, your skin type, your skin concerns and your preferences.

A good place to start is to choose a suitable cleansing product and a moisturizer, then think about whether you need anything else in particular. You can also always ask us for help choosing products!

  • Cleansing

Facial cleansing can be done with either one or two products. Watermelon Sorbet Balm removes make-up particularly well and is also suitable for cleansing really dry skin. Kiwi Clear Gel Cleanser and Peach Cleansing Cream, on the other hand, remove light make-up, but cleanse the skin more effectively.

If you need effective makeup removal as well as skin cleansing, you can first remove makeup with the Watermelon Sorbet Balm first and finish with the one of the cleansers. This is called double cleansing.

  • Hydration & Moisture

The skin needs both water and oil and these are sometimes mixed up with the words hydration and moisture. Hydration refers to water and moisture refers to oil in the skin.

All skin types benefit from water hydration, but some people’s skin is especially dehydrated on the surface, so the skin lacks a lot of water. The Watermelon Dew line can especially help with dehydration.

However, not everyone’s skin needs separate moisturizing if the skin is already oily. However, if your skin is classically dry and needs oil moisturizing, you should try the Peach Barrier line.

Even if the skin is oily and does not need oil moisturizing, it is good for everyone to use a moisturizer, even a light gel-like one.

  • Exfoliation

The skin exfoliates naturally, but sometimes the skin needs a little help exfoliating. Exfoliating acids are a good way to gently dissolve the adhesives of dead skin cells, allowing the skin cells to fall off on their own.

Exfoliating the skin helps brighten, smooth and clear the skin. So all skin types can benefit from it.

However, you should exfoliate according to your skin type, so that the skin is not unnecessarily irritated by the exfoliation. 1-3 times a week is enough for most skin types, if you use a separate exfoliating product, such as the Kiwi Clear Serum.

  • Skincare for all ages

    Caring for young skin

Young skin needs no other skin care than gentle cleansing and a moisturizer. The use of sunscreen is also recommended, as it prevents most skin problems. Peach Cleansing Cream and Watermelon Jelly Cream are good options for young skin.

    Caring for teenage skin

Taking care of teenage skin is much the same as taking care of young skin. The exception is the treatment of first blemishes, for which you can use either a deep-cleansing product, such as the Kiwi Clear Gel Cleanser, or a treatment serum such as the Kiwi Clear Serum. The serum is more effective than the cleanser for treating blemishes. Don’t forget sunscreen!

    Caring for adult skin

When treating adult skin, treating different skin concerns becomes more relevant. To treat dullness, pigmentation, texture and first fine lines, you can choose stronger products or just use the Kiwi Clear Serum more often. Sunscreen is still an important part of preventing many skin concerns.

  • Skin types

Skin types are often divided into oily, dry, normal and combination skin.

Oily skin has more sebum production, and therefore oily skin get clogged more easily. More nourishing formulas often feel heavy on oily skin. Oily skin should also be cleansed more deeply.

Dry skin has too little sebum production. This type of skin should be treated with highly moisturizing products and it should be cleansed more gently.

In normal skin, sebum production is normal. However, normal skin can equally need hydration and can have other skin concerns. So remember to take care of normal skin as well, even if dryness or oiliness is not a problem.

Combination skin can be of many types. Combination skin has oily, dry and normal skin areas, and their location and the amount of oiliness and dryness varies from person to person. Combination skin should be treated according to what the skin has the most or make compromises. For example, you can use a milder cleansing product, but a gel-type moisturizer.

You can have sensitive skin in addition to having any other skin type. Sensitive skin reacts more strongly to cleansing products, strong active ingredients and allergens. The skin can also become sensitized if the skin barrier is damaged. Sensitive skin should be treated with gentle products without active ingredients and without perfumes or other allergens.

  • Figuring out your skin type

You can find out your skin type by cleaning your face and letting it dry for about 30 minutes.

    • After this, you can notice if your whole face gets oily. If yes, your skin type is oily.
    • If your whole face dries up and your skin tightens after 30 minutes, your skin type is dry.
    • If your face is not tightened and does not get oily, your skin type is normal.
    • If only part of your face gets oily and part remains dry, you have combination skin.
    • Sensitive skin can be recognized by the fact that it reacts easily to cleansing products, active ingredients or allergens, such as perfume.
  • Skin irritation

Skin irritation can be caused by a cleansing product that is too strong, by an active ingredient that is too strong, by an allergen that is not suitable for your skin, or by excessive use of any of these.

Dry, sensitive and young skin should be especially careful not to use too strong products that can damage the skin barrier.

Kiwi Clear Gel Cleanser is suitable for most people to use daily, but some can only use the product occasionally and some do not tolerate acids at all.

Kiwi Clear Serum is suitable for most people to use 1-3 times a week, but again some can even use the product daily and some can only occasionally.

We do not recommend the Kiwi Clear Serum for young skin, because it is not yet needed. Also, Kiwi Clear Serum should always be applied in the evening, as it can cause sensitivity to the sun, which in turn can cause skin irritation.

  • Trying out new products

Whatever the product is, you should start using it with caution. It’s always possible that a product causes an allergic reaction, even if the product doesn’t contain any typical allergens or active ingredients.

Therefore, the product should always be tested first on, for example, the wrist or behind the ear, let it sit overnight (unless it is a washable product) and see if the product develops a reaction. This way you avoid the reaction occurring on the face.

Smuuti Skincare Routine

Information about the ingredients

Smuuti Skin products focus on hydration and glowy skin. Watermelon Dew line contains Hyaluronic Acid and Watermelon Extract, while the Kiwi Clear line contain Kiwi Extract and exfoliating acids.

  • Watermelon extract

Watermelon is a delicious, summery fruit packed with vitamins, antioxidants – and of course, plenty of water. Watermelon extract is rich in vitamins (A, B and C) and amino acids that are beneficial to the skin, moisturising, brightening and soothing. Thanks to its high water content, watermelon is a highly moisturising ingredient that also helps to smooth fine lines.

In Korea, watermelon has been used in skincare for generations. For example, watermelon is used to soothe irritated or sunburnt skin. Watermelon extract soothes skin irritation, reduces redness and speeds up skin regeneration.

  • Kiwi extract

Kiwi extract contains the exfoliating enzyme actinidin. Enzyme peeling is very gentle. Kiwi also contains skin-brightening vitamin C and nourishing vitamin E. In addition, kiwi is packed with other nutrients and antioxidants.

  • Peach Extract

Peach is a fruit rich in vitamins and antioxidants and these nutrients give the fruit its many skin benefits. Vitamin A, B and C help brighten, condition and strengthen the skin. Like watermelon, peach also contains the antioxidant lykopene which gives the fruit its reddish color. Peach also contains many skin-nourishing proteins and Ceramides.

  • Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is one of the most effective ingredients for skin hydration as it has the ability to retain up to 10 times its own weight in water. Hyaluronic acid makes the skin hydrated, smooth and plump. Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the skin, so it helps to maintain the skin’s natural moisture balance. All skin types, from oily to sensitive, can benefit from moisturising. Hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliating acid, despite its name, so you can safely use it in your skincare routine every morning and evening. Hyaluronic acid has a larger molecular size, so it acts on the surface layers of the skin. It forms a moisturising film on the surface of the skin, from which moisture is released throughout the day.

  • Hydrolysed hyaluronic acid

Hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid is a hyaluronic acid that has been broken down into smaller particles so that it is absorbed more effectively into the skin. This allows it to hydrate the deeper layers of the skin for a long time.

  • Glycerin

Glycerin is one of the most common hydrating ingredients used in skincare, and for a good reason! It hydrates the skin effectively and strengthens the skin barrier while helping the skin stay hydrated for a long time.

  • AHAs, BHAs and PHAs

AHAs are water-soluble acids, so they exfoliate the surface layer of the skin and moisturise the skin. AHA acids are best used to treat whiteheads, surface texture and brighten skin tone. Out of all AHAs, Glycolic acid can stimulate collagen production in the skin.

BHAs are oil-soluble acids, so they exfoliate the skin from deeper within the pores. BHA acids work best for blackheads, clogged pores, smoothing the skin and reducing redness on the skin.

PHAs are a new generation of AHAs. They are also water soluble, but very gentle. They also effectively moisturise the skin and are particularly helpful in smoothing surface roughness.

  • Fruit acid complex

A compound of different plant extracts containing 5 different AHAs. A very gentle but effective way to exfoliate the skin. The compound is bioactive and stable, meaning it works effectively on the skin and remains effective throughout the product’s life. The compound exfoliates dead skin cells, stimulates skin regeneration and brightens the skin.

  • Peach Ceramides

Ceramides are an important part of the skin’s barrier, also known as the lipid layer. Ceramides, Cholesterol and Fatty Acids make up most of the skin barrier, and adding these to your skin can help replenish the barrier. A stronger barrier helps keep irritants out and the skin’s water-balance in check.

  • Niacinamide

Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, has many skin benefits. It for example brightens, strengthens and protects the skin. 2% is an ideal amount for strengthening dry and sensitive skin while bringing some gentle glow.

  • Squalane

Squalane is an example of a “dry-oil”. Dry-oils don’t feel heavy or greasy on the skin, but still moisturize, soften and condition the skin. Dry-oils are made up of mostly Linoleic Acid which makes the oils lightweight, whereas Oleic Acid makes oils greasier and more pore clogging. Squalane also resembles the skin’s own sebum, which mean the skin can use it to replace some of its own heavier sebum.
